Vandals have destroyed around 80 trees planted to mark the Queen's Jubilee year, only two weeks after they were put in place. The trees were planted in Brixworth, Northamptonshire by children and their parents
Brixworth Parish Council was given 100 trees by the Woodland Trust, which they planted with help from the community in St David's recreational ground off Froxhill Crescent, Ashway recreational ground, and in Spratton Road recreational ground.
Brixworth Parish councillor Ian Barratt, who co-ordinated the scheme, said: "Someone has systematically destroyed the trees and it is such a disappointment. It is hurtful, but we won't let them win. We will re-plant more trees in the New Year."
A campaign has been launched to plant 1,000 new trees in Bedford by 2014.
Many of the 24,000 trees already in the Borough are coming to the end of their life. The Bedford Tree Fund hopes to raise £10,000 to fund the new planting project.
