Coryton: Jobs 'could have been saved'

850 jobs could have been saved at the Coryton oil refinery in Essex according to an Essex MP.

South Basildon and East Thurrock MP Stephen Metcalfe told the Commons last night that the refinery could have been rescued.

Last night the government defended the decision not to offer state aid to keep the refinery open.

Yesterday it was announced the site will be turned into an import terminal and storage facility for petrol and diesel.
