The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge has raised the £3.9 million needed to buy Nicolas Poussin's masterpiece Extreme Unction.
The target has been reached after the Heritage Lottery Fund gave the museum a grant of over three million pounds. The rest of the money was donated by the public and charities.
The picture is actually valued at fourteen million pounds but the Fitzwilliam has been able to buy it under the Government's Acceptance in Lieu scheme. It's hoped the painting will go on display in Cambridge next month.
