Two councils to get Government bin collection cash

Only a handful of authorities bid for Government bin cash Credit: PA

A £250 million Government pot to pay councils to keep or reintroduce weekly bin collections is only funding a handful of local authorities to switch back - including two from our region.

Rochford District Council in Essex and Great Yarmouth Borough Council in Norfolk have successfully bid for cash from the Communities and Local Government's weekly bin collection fund.

The scheme was first announced before last year's Tory Party Conference by Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles to encourage councils to maintain or return to weekly bin collections, which he describes as a "basic right".
