The Queen missed the Sunday church service at her Sandringham estate after suffering from a cold. The monarch usually visits St Mary Magdalene Church most Sundays while staying at her Norfolk home.

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said: "The Queen was getting over the tail end of a cold. We are expecting business as usual next week."

The Queen will use her traditional Christmas Day message, filmed in 3D for the first time, to pay tribute to the nation's athletes for delivering a "splendid summer of sport" at the London Olympics. Click here for more details.
