Suffolk Police warn of 'distraction burglaries'

Suffolk Police are warning residents to be extra careful after several burglaries happened in the county yesterday.

In the incidents the offenders - who were working in pairs - knocked on doors and distracted homeowners. Then then entered the properties and were either disturbed or stole items or cash.

Suffolk Police have now issued guidelines to make sure people do not become the victim of a distraction burglary.

LOCK – Keep your front and back doors locked, even when at home.

STOP – Before you answer the door, stop and think if you are expecting anyone. Look through the spy-hole or the window to see who it is.

CHAIN – If you decide to open the door, put the door chain or bar on first. Keep the chain or bar on while you are talking to the person on the doorstep.

CHECK – Check their details and identity before you let them into your home. If it is someone claiming to be an official, ask for their identity card.
