The story of a woman who kept one of Northamptonshire's country houses from ruin has been uncovered.

Born in 1686, Vere Isham's family owned Lamport Hall, just outside Northampton.

Research by the Lamport Hall Preservation Trust into her letters suggests that although she was not entitled to any inheritance, she virtually ran the estate when her mother died in 1713, unusually superseding her grieving father and brothers.
