Southend was the busiest lifeboat station in Britain last year with 137 callouts for its hovercraft and two inshore lifeboats. The station at nearby Harwich faced some of the roughest conditions, its lifeboat launched six times in conditions of gale force 8.

Meanwhile Norfolk's RNLI lifeboats launched 130 times whilst lifeguards helped 704 beachgoers in 2012. In Suffolk the RNLI stations bucked the national downward trend with a 50% increase in shouts.
