National Express train operator c2c has begun work on installing new ticket barriers at Southend East station. It's the last remaining station without ticket barriers on the c2c route between London and Essex.

The new £500,000 barriers, which will be operational in April, will help improve the station environment as well as reduce fare dodging.

National Express says ensuring every station on the c2c network has ticket barriers is also an important step towards introducing new Oyster-style “smart” ticketing for c2c passengers.
