Historic mug shots highlight criminal past

These days we all take for granted mug shots of criminals - often circulated to catch someone on the run from the police - but did you know the idea of taking photos of offenders originated in Bedfordshire 150 years ago.

In the 1850s the governor of Bedford Prison - Robert Evan Roberts - decided it would be a good idea to capture criminals on camera. And now those first few mug shots are available to view at the county archive.
