The owners of Southwold Pier have announced that they've sold it to a hotel group.

Gough Hotels Limited have bought the leisure pier for an undisclosed sum. Plans to turn the pavillion into a 30-bedroom luxury hotel were given the go-ahead in December 2010.

Gough Hotels own the Angel Hotel in Bury St Edmunds and the Salthouse Harbour Hotel in Ipswich.

The current pier owners, Stephen and Antonia Bournes, bought it in March 2005 and have transformed it into a thriving attraction, attracting more than 750,000 visitors a year.

The pier is currently the second biggest employer in Southwold and has 45 full-time staff, which rises to 95 people in the summer season.
