Man in court over Costessey cannabis factory

A 46-year-old Norwich man found growing more than 80 cannabis plants at his Costessey home has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Gary Budrey, of Bottom Breck Close, appeared at Norwich Crown Court on Tuesday 7 May after pleading guilty to producing a Class B drug at an earlier hearing.

Police carried out a warrant at his address last year seizing plants and cultivating equipment. Eighty-seven plants were discovered.

Budrey was arrested a few days later in connection with the find.

He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment suspended for two years and ordered to pay £100 victim surcharge or serve seven days imprisonment for failure to pay. The court also ordered for the destruction of the drugs and paraphernalia.

"Stopping the supply of drugs in our communities and securing prosecutions such as this is a priority for police. I hope this sentence serves as a warning to others that such activity will not be tolerated and reassures local residents that we will act on information and take appropriate action."
