Man due in court over 'racist tweets'

A man is due to appear in court today charged with sending racist tweets to two Northampton Town football players.

Ben Townsend, 25, faces two counts of sending by public communications network an offensive, indecent, obscene or menacing message.

Townsend, of Norwich Drive in Cheltenham, will attend at hearing at Cheltenham Magistrates' Court.

Officers from Gloucestershire Police arrested Townsend on May 8 under the Malicious Communications Act, following an investigation by the force and Northamptonshire Police.

His arrest followed the allegation that racist tweets were sent to Adebayo Akinfenwa and Clarke Carlisle.

The tweets were allegedly sent after Northampton Town beat Cheltenham Town in the second leg of their League Two play-off semi-final.
