Railway stations in parts of Essex have seen a huge reduction in the number of cigarette butts being dropped following an awareness campaign.

The campaign targeted smokers at Braintree and Witham. Results show there has been a 45% reduction in the number of discarded cigarette butts.

Over 250 cigarettes were being dropped at the stations each week before the start of the campaign.
