Firefighter inquest records open verdict

An inquest into the death of a firefighter who was found hanged in his Essex home has recorded an open verdict.

Martin Sibley, who was 48, was found dead at his home in Colchester in June. He was being questioned by police in connection with their investigation into sex abuse claims within the fire service dating back to the 1980s.

A letter from Mr Sibley's mother was read to the inquest in Chelmsford in which she said that she thought that her son had panicked when he discovered that he was going to be questioned.

Coroner Caroline Beasley-Murray concluded that no one could have anticipated Mr Sibley's actions.

"We will never know what went through his mind an hour before he died."
