Essex County Council has been granted just over £1.4 million, to help improve a notoriously busy roundabout.
The Government funding is part of a nationwide scheme to tackle congested roads.
The improvements to the Army and Navy Roundabout in Chelmsford, are part of a bigger project to extend a slip road, linking Parkway and Chelmer Road.
Work will include a wider footway, cyclepath and pedestrian crossing. Construction's expected to start next year.
