Police use social media to tackle domestic abuse

Northamptonshire Police will be using Facebook and Twitter on Monday 6th January to raise awareness of domestic abuse, teenage relationship abuse and stalking.

As part of the Operation Challenge Christmas and New Year campaign, they'll use social media for those needing help and advice.

Videos and questions will be posted to encourage online debate and useful links and numbers made available for those who need it.

We've got around 33,000 fans on Facebook and around 17,500 followers of our main Twitter account, which doesn't include those following individual officers and departments.

That's a lot of people we can communicate with and the potential number of people we can reach is phenomenal.

We treat domestic abuse very seriously all year round but we are aware that at this time of year there can be an increase because of financial pressures and increased alcohol consumption. It's also..when people make resolutions to leave abusive relationships. We want to reassure these people that help is out there."
