Ambulances responding to 999 calls can bring children straight to Bedford Hospital's accident and emergency department instead of taking them to a neighbouring hospital.

Until 23 January 2014, ambulances on emergency calls had to take children to either Milton Keynes or Luton.

Children's services at Bedford were suspended in summer 2013 after junior doctors there said they lacked supervision prompting protests by parents. Now all children's services have re-opened at the hospital.
