Eric Pickles criticises apostrophe ban

Fury at apostrophes ban Credit: ITV Anglia

Communities secretary Eric Pickles has hit out at a decision by Cambridge City Council to ban apostrophes from street signs.

In a letter to the Daily Telegraph, he called it "disengenuous and unnecessary" and insisted there was no Whitehall diktat demanding the "abolition of the English apostrophe".

The council has stopped using the punctuation in its new street signs. It says it was following guidance and aimed to prevent mistakes by the emergency services.
