Hundreds gather in Peterborough for Muslim event to tackle prejudice and promote harmony

Hundreds of people gathered in Peterborough this afternoon to tackle prejudice and raise awareness of Muslim beliefs and culture.

The event was hosted by the Muslim Council of Peterborough to promote peace and harmony in the city and to bring people of different faiths together.

Mohammad Choudhary, Chairman, Muslim Council of Peterborough: "Recent events by a minority of individuals have resulted in the Muslim community suffering suspicion and prejudice. It is our hope our event will go some way to resolving any misconceptions of what Islam stands for."

Today's event attracted around 500 people who travelled from all over the UK. It was also attended by the Mayor of Peterborough, local councillors and religious leaders.

It comes just a few weeks before an English Defence League demonstration is due to be held in the city.
