The Roads minister Robert Goodwill has hinted the government may fund a partial upgrade of the A47 which runs from the Midlands to the Norfolk Coast.
He was responding to a debate led by Norfolk MPs, who say the road should be fully dualled to improve safety and boost the economy in the region.
Last month the government launched a feasibility study into the need for improvements to the road between Peterborough and Great Yarmouth.
