Local houses for local people. That's the call from one Essex MP who accuses some housing associations of getting their priorities wrong.

Chelmsford's MP, Simon Burns, says the rules as they stand mean people with no connection to the area can jump the queue for social housing ahead of someone who has always lived in the area.

He said: "I think local housing first of all for local people and if there is spare capacity then certainly one can then encourage people from else where to come and live there because Chelmsford is a very attractive place."
