Police in Essex are hunting a man armed with a firearm who threatened officers in Wivenhoe near Colchester.

Police went to Stanley Road in the town following reports of break-in at around 9.35pm on Tuesday evening.

They found a man who appeared to have a firearm and he threatened the officers before making off on foot.

An extensive search involving specialist officers took place.

Police have issued a description of the man they are trying to trace.

  • White with a slim build
  • Short light/ash blond hair
  • Around 6ft/6ft 1ins tall
  • Wearing a navy blue quilter bomber-style jacket

"We have a significant amount of resources, including specialist officers and the dog unit, dedicated to looking for this man and we are doing everything we can to locate him.

"No-one was injured in this incident and there is no indication there is any threat to the public so I would urge the residents of Wivenhoe to go about their normal daily routines.
