Kept in the dark for seven years

A lamp post in Burnham-on-Crouch in Essex has yet to be turned on, seven years after it was put up.

Now the town mayor is asking all the local councils to see the light and work together to switch it on.

The lamp post was installed by the town council.

No one decided then, or can decide now, who should pay the costs to connecting it to the mains, expected to be around £5,000

"As you can imagine as a small council we have to be very careful how we spend taxpayers' money. We've got a contractor coming to visit to see if a solar panel solution, which will be considerably cheaper, will actually solve the problem"

– Bob Calver, Mayor
