Big rise in hate crime leads to new reporting centres

Barnfield College in Luton has become the first educational establishment in Bedfordshire to become a Hate Crime Reporting Centre.

A Luton college has become the first educational establishment in Bedfordshire to become a Hate Crime Reporting Centre.

It's a crime that targets race, religion, disability or sexual orientation and there's been a huge increase in the number of incidents reported last year in the county and nationally.

Students at Barnfield College in Luton are being encouraged to talk to specially trained staff if they think have been a victim or a witness.

Working with police, the reporting centres allow victims and witnesses to talk about the matter in familiar surroundings, and with someone they know, rather than reporting it directly to officers.
