Armed officers deployed more than 500 times in Essex

Armed Officers were called out more than 500 times in the Essex last year.

Incidents ranged from emergency calls and reports of criminals with guns, to those in distress who posed a risk to themselves.

There were 2,596 incidents requiring the support of Taser-trained officers, to deal with volatile or dangerous suspects. Despite the number of incidents, Taser was only fired at 24 of the incidents.

Armed officers also carried out 768 arrests during 2017, completed 7,872 hours of basic firearms training and attended 14,580 non-firearms incidents.

Nationally, recent events of the last few years - including the tragic terror attacks in London and Manchester - have demonstrated that now, more than ever, every force needs firearms officers.
