An inmate who climbed onto the roof of Chelmsford prison has come down after a stand-off which lasted more than 24 hours.

The Ministry of Justice has confirmed the situation has reached a peaceful conclusion.

Essex Police were called at 11am yesterday (June 12) to assist the prison service and they closed nearby roads "as a precaution".

A topless man wearing grey jogging bottoms was reported to be on the wall "shouting and throwing things".
