Australian washout

Bad weather caused chaos in Australia's southern states on Saturday, with major flooding in Victoria state, Australian media reported.

The State Emergency Service responded to more than 800 calls for assistance on Saturday, while the army had been called in to assist with flood damage assessment.

In the Goldfields region, about 100 residents in the central town of Creswick were relocated to the local town hall after flash flooding. 30 residents from a caravan park in the neighbouring town of Clunes were also relocated.

In the small town of Euroa, less than 100 miles from Melbourne, there was growing concern that nearby rivers could burst their banks threatening up to 100 homes.

Just outside the major regional centre of Bendigo in central Victoria, flood waters caused havoc for drivers attempting to drive to and from their properties.

Downpours in the state have also triggered landslides. A major road was blocked and a popular ski resort was closed after part of the building was damaged.

The state's north is bracing for floods as rivers continue to rise, according to media reports.

Only one injury was reported across the state on Saturday.

Flash flood warnings remain in place for all western, central and northern districts across Victoria state and are likely to continue until Sunday morning.
