Cumbria police are appealing for witnesses and information to a fatal road accident on the M6 on Thursday.
It happened on the southbound carriageway just south of junction 39, Shap, at 3.40pm.
The collision involved a silver Skoda motor car and a red Royal Mail HGV. The driver of the Skoda, a 57 year old man from Glasgow, received serious injuries and was airlifted to James Cook hospital, Middlesborough where he is undergoing treatment. His condition is described as stable.
Sadly, the female passenger of the same car, believed to be aged in her 30s and from the Glasgow area, received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The HGV driver, a 40 year old man from Carlisle, was unharmed.
The motorway was closed for over 5 hours whilst the police carried out a lengthy investigation and police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.
