There's been widespread flash flooding after storms battered the region for much of the afternoon.
The South Lakes was one of the worst affected areas, with some properties flooded and many more at risk.
The nursery and reception classes at Appleby Primary School will be closed tomorrow after part of the building was flooded. It had to be pumped out by Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service - they dealt with more than 50 calls during the course of the day.
There was chaos on the trains - a series of landslips between Penrith and Oxenholme has closed the West Coast Mainline. Bus services are now operating and Virgin Trains have warned of long delays. There are similar problems on the East Coast Mainline after a lanslip near Berwick caused widespread disruption.
Cumbria Police have been warning motorists to slow down and drive according to the conditions after standing water on the M6 and many of the counties main roads.
Flood alerts remain in place on all of Cumbria's rivers - but the Environment Agency are now confident that the conditions will improve by this evening.
