Events are taking place across the region to mark Armed Forces Day, a national celebration of the UK's Armed Forces.

In Carlisle, a number of organisations including the Royal British Legion, Royal Air Force, Carlisle Gurkha and Nepalese Association and Cadet Units set up stalls and took part in displays in the town centre.

Major Joseph Mark, the President of the Legion's Carlisle branch says it is an important day.

Events are also being held in Stranraer and in Dumfries, where Shadow Defence Minister and local MP Russell Brown paid tribute to those who serve their country.

On Armed Forces Day the country will come together to pay tribute. Nothing embodies the best of British more than the courageous men and woman who put their lives on the line to protect our national security. Our service personnel are the best and bravest in the world, and a never ending source of inspiration.

It will be an honour to spend Armed Forces Day with local veterans and cadets in our area and attend the parade in Dumfries. The flag lowering service in Stranraer will be a moment for the whole community to reflect and say thanks to our troops, who have served our country with such distinction.
