Cumbria County Council's full cabinet is meeting to discuss and debate whether west Cumbria should continue to look at the possibility of building an underground nuclear waste store.
The county council along with Allerdale Borough and Copleland Borough councils have expressed an interest, to the government, in hosting the facility.
No decision is being made yet. All three councils will vote on October 11 and decide whether to go through to the next stage of the governments process and look for a site.
Before the meeting, members of Radiation Free Lakeland staged a protest. They later put questions to the council.
Marianne Birkby told the council that they believed the process to be a sham and tore up a letter the government had sent to the leader of Copeland Council promising remuneration should the councils eventually agree to volunteer.
