Crime has nearly halved at a notorious area of Galashiels since the start of a community programme 2 years ago.
A pledge was taken by various groups to work closely with residents of Church Square to clear up rubbish and reduce anti-social behaviour. Since then crime has been reduced by nearly 50%.
– Local resident
"You don't see as much crime here, there isn't really any graffiti, you don't see things getting broken and torn to bits because it's not lying around anymore. It shows there is a strong local enforcement helping the community get better."
The task team is formed by members of the police, Scottish Borders Council and Scottish Borders Housing Association.
– Kenny Simpson, Chief Inspector Lothian and Borders Police
We carried out action days and projects to address these issues and bring out the sense of civic pride within all members of the community. We are delighted with the results and will continue to engage with the residents of Church Square."
