The prestigious award is the result of partnership working between a number of organisations including; the local council, the police and the Chamber of Trade.

Galashiels Safer Town Partnership won the award for their work making the town centre a safe place to shop.Since it started 12 months ago, shoplifting has fallen by nearly 20%. The scheme targets retail crime, including forged notes, shoplifting and fraud.

PC John Lennon says:

"We have brought in things like shopwatch, which targets theft and forged notes. Information can be passed from police to all 92 retailers involved at the press of a button. It is a great honour for the town."
