Former Canon of Carlisle Cathedral guilty of child sex offences

His offences were numerous and lasted more than two decades. His victims were 3 boys, abused over a period from 1979 to 1991.

Yet when church officials found out about Ronald Johns' offences, they decided not to involve the police. Instead Johns' was moved from his position as Canon of Carlisle Cathedral to a lesser role in Caldbeck.

Today the Church apologised about what it calls a 'mistake' and for the 'mismanagement' of the situation. The apology came outside Carlisle Crown Court where Johns today pleaded guilty to two charges of indecent assault and eight of gross indecency.

He was ordered to sign the sex offenders register and bailed to reappear in Carlisle in November for sentencing. Judge Paul Batty QC warned him that prison had to be considered.
