Matthew Scott, 25, of Ellesmere Way, Carlisle, and Kye Halliburton, 21, of Harker Park Road, Carlisle, were caught on CCTV and admitted the offences at an earlier hearing.

The judge, Paul Batty QC said,

"I have no doubt the village of Wetheral and the whole of Cumbria was shocked when it heard of this crime. You targeted a vulnerable person to get money for drugs. She was absolutely terrified and traumatised by what you did.

"The effect on her has been devastating. This was an outrageous crime."

– Judge Paul Batty QC

The shop assistant was praised for her bravery and will be awarded £250 out of public funds.

Cumbria police say the sentence sends out a clear message to criminals.
