The flattering scoreline hardly reflects the fact that for seventy minutes Ebbsfleet were very much in this game and will have returned to the South Coast rueing missed opportunities. United eventually ran out 4-2 winners. See all the goals below:
Dave Symington put Carlisle ahead in first half injury time before Nathan Elder equalised for the visitors. The two sides exchanged chances until Liam Noble put United ahead on the hour mark. In the last ten minutes Ebbsfleet tired noticeably and Carlisle capitalised with goals from James Berrett and Joe Garner before Joe Howe gave Ebbsfleet fans a consolation goal in injury time.
So United progress but this game left more questions than answers. Once more United conceded easily at home and question marks continue to hang over the defence- remember this was a visiting side two divisions below Carlisle United. Adam Collin returned to United's goal but Greg Abbott gave no indication of whether this was a one off change or a reassessment of the pecking order for the number 1 jersey. The crowd too will have been a concern. Just 2,373 supporters ame to see the game, far fewer than would have been hoped for. Greg Abbott gave us an extended interview after the game. See what he had to say below:
