Dumfries and Galloway Council is to introduce a unique scheme offering existing education staff the opportunity to retrain as teachers.
‘Grow Your Own Teachers’ offers existing employees of the Council’s Education Service who already have a degree the chance to study locally for a post graduate certificate of education while still being employed by the Council.
The initiative, which recently received the backing of the Scottish Government, will aim to fill vacancies in the region where it has formerly been hard to recruit staff.
The council says it is a particular problem recruiting primary school teachers in the west of the region.
Ten additional places will be available at the University of the West of Scotland’s Ayr campus in academic year 2015/16.
