Huge send-off for veteran after social media appeal

Dozens of veterans and well-wishers have celebrated the life of a Second World War veteran, by attending his funeral near Dumfries.

Billy Cook died aged 92, but because he had no family his friends were concerned that nobody would show up to his funeral.

One family friend, Corporal Ewan Howieson, posted an appeal on social media to urge local people to come along and show their support for the veteran, who joined the RAF during World War Two, when he was just 18.

Billy was a gentleman, he was a family friend really and he was one of the reasons that inspired me to join the RAF.

I knew there was going to be a few family friends here today but not very many, and I thought that it would be a shame just to have five or six people here, so I put out an appeal for veterans and ex service people to come along today."

The appeal was successful, as more than one hundred people arrived to celebrate the veteran's life.
