The results from a survey on future options for Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries, have been shared by the Dumfries & Galloway council.

Over 1,000 people were recorded to have taken part in the survey, which was put together to find out how people currently use the centre, what art galleries in Dumfries should offer in future and where the best location for an arts centre would be.

94% of respondents said they had been to Gracefield before, with 52% of those who had visited during the last 12 months, attending at least four times.

The main reason why people said they visit the arts centre is to see exhibitions, as well as visit the café and the craft shop.

The top choice for what should be retained at the centre was:

  • Exhibitions featuring artist and makers from Dumfries and Galloway

The top choice for what an art gallery in Dumfries should offer in future years was:

  • Free access to local, national and international exhibitions

The most important factor for the council to consider when deciding the best location for a future arts centre in Dumfries was:

  • The location has space for exhibitions, meeting and activity rooms all on one site

We will be looking at whether Gracefield’s current services and facilities could be improved if they were re-located to a more central location in Dumfries and we will also look at whether improvements could be made on the existing Gracefield site. We’re delighted that we have had such a great response to the survey and this feedback will be used to inform our decision making.”

– COUNCILLOR ANDY FERGUSON, COMMUNITIES CHAIRMAN

The council will release a report based on these findings late 2017. More details can be found on their website.
