Walks at Scafell Pike, Ambleside and Langdale are among the most trodden paths in the UK, according to Ordnance Survey (OS).
The walk to the summit of Snowdon in Wales was the most used followed by the Peak District, but the Lake District has eight areas featured in the league table created by the mapping agency.
It made the discovery by analysing almost 400,000 routes followed by walkers using its digital map app, OS Maps.
It broke the country down into square kilometres and counted the number of routes passing through each square, has produced its league table which shows The Lake District’s Scafell Pike summit and Ambleside appear at number three and five respectively.
Nick Giles, managing director of Ordnance Survey Leisure, said: “It may be a relatively small island we live on, but it’s crammed with variation and beauty. I think this is reflected in these tables, there is a nice geographic spread – though it would be nice to see more routes being created in Scotland.”
“Over the past twelve months we have introduced some key features to OS Maps, such as 3D route planning, to make the outdoors enjoyable, accessible and safe for all, and we have some exciting things coming up in development. The app now contains almost 1.2 million private and public routes, it is one of the largest databases of its kind in the world, and it’ll be interesting to see how much this league table changes next year, he added.
OS has created another league table to establish the most popular towns and cities to create routes in. To conduct the analysis OS has looked at the full extent of the towns and cities rather than the square kilometre method, hence why Ambleside, which appears in both tables, has two different number of routes.
