Thousands attend Grasmere Sports

Thousands of people were at Grasmere Sports today to enjoy pursuits such as Cumberland wrestling, hound trials, fell racing, long jump and dog shows.

"We have 15 French here today, 20 Scottish, a couple of Islandicers, plus all the other local wrestlers."

"They run an aniseed trail which is aniseed mixed with paraffin. They run round, that was a 5 mile trail, the older dogs run about 8 to 10 miles."

Grasmere Sports is one of the bigger Lakeland Fairs, with around 4,500 people.

Amongst them was fell running royalty in the shape of Fred Reeves, the man who has held the Senior Guides Rave record for 39 years.

"It's quite steep going up and then the rocks at the top, the first part coming down is what we used to call 'sidey-banks': you were going down steep but on the side, you had a tendency to maybe tumble over."
