A Cumbrian couple are celebrating after scooping £1million in the EuroMillions UK Millionaire Maker draw.

Helen and Derek Garnett’s lottery win comes just months after 38-year-old Helen received the all-clear from cancer.

She says she is now looking forward to living the life she always dreamed of with her husband, 52-year-old Sellafield worker Derek and 14-year-old daughter.

Helen is a shop assistant at The Northern Line, a homeware and gift store in Ulverston, and says she has no plans to give up work.

This win really could not have come at a better time.

“I was diagnosed with cervical cancer at the end of last year. Fortunately I got the all clear earlier this year which was the best news I could have hoped for.

“A few months later Derek snapped a tendon in his leg and was forced to take three months off work – he has only just returned to work. So we obviously lost quite a bit of money around this time.

“And now we have won on EuroMillions – this is just a dream come true for us.”

Helen has already been out to choose the car of her dreams, a dark grey Mercedes and a new home is on the shopping list for the couple.

She had been out celebrating her dad’s birthday on the night of the draw and decided to go online to check her ticket when she got home.

There was an email from Camelot saying I had good news and to log into my account.

“I thought I had probably won two or three pounds. But I then saw all of the zeros. I just thought this cannot be right. I kept counting the zeros over and over again.

“I then rushed upstairs to Derek who was asleep in bed and woke him, saying you have to check this now, how many zeros can you see?

“He was half asleep but soon woke up with all of my shouting!

“He counted them and then just shouted out: ‘We have won £1M. There are definitely six zeros!’ I actually think we are both still in shock and this news is still sinking in.

“We have so much to look forward to now, the choices are endless.”
