Violent crime has risen in Cumbria, with police saying many incidents are fuelled by alcohol.

The year up to August saw an 8% increase in violent crime incidents and the number of offences rose by 568.

This brings the total number of violent crime offences in the county to 7,879.

Cumbria's Assisant Chief Constable commented on whether he was concerned by the 8% rise:

Cumbria has shown one of the smallest increases, but nonetheless, we do get concerned when offences that have a big impact on people rise.

However, across a population of half a million people in Cumbria and seven million visitors - we've had a very very small number of offences - the second lowest in the whole of England and Wales."

– Mark Webster, Assisant Chief Constable
