Reality TV star Joey Essex was the VIP guest at Ullswater Community College's Prize Day in Penrith today.

He's best known for his time on ITV2's The Only Way is Essex, and has also appeared on I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! and The Jump.

Students entertained Joey and local primary schools with gymnastic and dance performances, before a prize giving presentation.

Joey also held a Q&A session, which gave students the chance to ask the star about his achievements.

Joey says he thinks the school chose the right celebrity to attend the Prize Day:

I'm here to obviously meet everyone and it's great to be up here as well because I've never actually been to Penrith, so it's nice to see the countryside.

I'm here at the school to make the kids feel special and I think they've definitely chose the right person!

I don't want to get too deep, but I think that my story growing up... I found it quite tough. I feel like people don't really see that side of it.

In school I really tried hard even though people say I'm not really that clever - I really tried hard and I feel like I give off the same enthusiasm to others.

I think I do inspire people for that reason. It's not all about how clever you are, it's about just being a good person."

Ullswater Community College added:

He's a decent, honest, cheerful, chirpy celebrity. I don't actually require our guests to be inspiring, our kids are the people who are inspiring.

When people and visitors leave prize day what they say is 'that was an inspirational afternoon I've spent in that school'. So the young people are the inspiration.

Our guest is there to sprinkle stardust, to sprinkle a bit of special feeling, to give it a bit of va-va-voom. That's what I require.
