Europe’s biggest open-water swim event changes location

Almost 10,000 swimmers take part each year Photo: Great North Swim

Europe’s biggest open-water swimming event is set to move to a new home in Windermere, Cumbria next year.

After 10 years at Low Wood Bay, the Great North Swim is planned to be held at Brockhole from Friday 8 June to Sunday 10 June.

The new location is set in 30 acres of gardens that stretch to the shore of Windermere.

The event attracts almost 10,000 swimmers each year and the new location is said to offer a festival atmosphere across the three days.

Next year's Great North Swim is planned to offer activities for families, food from local producers, entertainment, and a craft beer tent for post-swim celebrations.

The Director of the Great Swim Series said:

After ten amazing years at Low Wood Bay, we’re really excited to take the Great North Swim to the next level at Brockhole on Windermere.

Since 2008 the swim has more than doubled in size, which demonstrates the popularity of the sport.

The appetite for new events and distances at the Great North Swim has increased year on year and we have now outgrown the facilities at the Low Wood Bay Hotel.

We’d like to thank the team at the Low Wood for their fantastic support over the last decade.

Our new location at Brockhole will allow us to continue to improve the Great Swim experience for all who come to Windermere to take part and spectate.”
