WATCH: Breaking the alcohol dependency stigma

During Alcohol Awareness Week, a campaign is underway in Cumbria to break the cycle of silence and stigma that is often experienced by families affected by drink.

Theresa Hetherington is a volunteer worker with Unity, the NHS alcohol and drug recovery service, which is commissioned by the county council.

Ten years ago she was drinking three bottles of wine every day. She sought help for her addiction after she was arrested, and now spends her time helping others.

It just wasn't talked about. You cannot just stop. It's an addiction and it's very dangerous as well if you suddenly stop.

What I would say is, I'm proof that it is possible, anything is possible but go and seek the help, pick up the phone, ask somebody.

There's always light at the end of the tunnel, things do get better.
