Lorry driver charged with causing death of 86-year-old woman by dangerous driving

A lorry driver's appeared in court charged with causing the death of a pensioner by dangerous driving.

The fatal crash happened on Thursday evening on the A689 near Carlisle airport.

86 year old Maureen Smith from Heads Nook was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her Fiat car was involved in a head on collision with a HGV lorry.

Her family said she was a "very much loved mum, grandma, great grandma" who gave a lot of time to her family and to charity.

43 year old lorry driver Jaroslaw Mieczan was remanded in custody and will appear at Carlisle Crown Court on 18 December.
