Police are searching for vandals who trashed a rugby pitch in Castle Douglas by driving a car around it.

The Stewartry Rugby Club's second team pitch has been torn up as a car was driven on it in continuous circles.

They believe 'boy racers' could be to blame but police say their investigation into the incident is continuing.

It is believed the car was driven into Greenlaw complex sometime on Saturday night or Sunday morning.

Club spokesman John Low said:

We don't know the exact time but it was after the Under 18s game on Saturday afternoon and we discovered it on Sunday.

It's a terrible mess and the wheels have churned up the grass leaving huge wheel marks all over the pitch."

John added:

We just can't think why someone would want to do this to the pitch. It's absolutely senseless.

We have games this weekend but the pitch is not playable and we will have to see what we can do with it.

There's no growth at this time of the year so it's all very sickening."
