Family pay tribute to grandfather killed in A66 collision

Police have confirmed that the man who died in the A66 collision this morning was 72-year-old Timothy Harkness from Carlisle.

The family of Mr Harkness have issued the following statement:

Tim was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Well loved by all his friends and colleagues for his quick wit and cheeky sense of humour. He had a love of horse racing and enjoyed life.”

A 22-year-old man from South Yorkshire was arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving and has been released under investigation.

The collision happened at around 5.40am on Tuesday 3 April and involved two lorries.

The A66 was closed between Kirkby Thore and Crackenthorpe for much of the day.

Cumbria Police have confirmed the road is now open.
